List of members of the Austrian National Council (XXIV legislative period)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of the members of the Austrian National Council (XXIV. Legislative period) . The XXIV legislative period began on October 28, 2008 and ended on October 28, 2013. During the legislative period, 219 members of the National Council belonged to the National Council.

After the National Council election on September 28, 2008 , 57 of the 183 mandates went to the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), 51 to the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), 34 to the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), 21 to the Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZÖ ) and 20 on Die Grünen - The green alternative (Greens).

Functions

National Council Presidency

After the SPÖ was able to defend first place in the National Council election, it was entitled to the First National Council President in accordance with parliamentary tradition. The SPÖ nominated Barbara Prammer again , who had held this position since October 30, 2006. In the election of the President of the National Council, Prammer was elected on October 28, 2008 with 140 of 182 votes. The ÖVP nominated Michael Spindelegger again for the office of Second National Council President , who received 142 of 170 valid votes. The nomination of Martin Graf as third President of the National Council by the FPÖ had been heavily criticized by the Greens and parts of the SPÖ in advance due to his membership of the Olympia fraternity . The Greens also nominated an opposing candidate, former club chairman Alexander Van der Bellen . Graf was eventually elected with just 109 votes, while van der Bellen received 27 votes and 20 votes were given to other candidates. Graf is likely to have received only a few votes from the SPÖ in his election - after the ÖVP, FPÖ and BZÖ, who supported Graf's election, combined 105 votes. After the Greens had appointed the third president of the National Council between 2006 and 2008, the election of Graf brought the function back into the hands of the FPÖ.

After Michael Spindelegger resigned from his post on December 2, 2008 after being elected Foreign Minister, Fritz Neugebauer (ÖVP) was elected as his successor. He was elected on December 3, 2008 with 124 votes out of 162. 38 votes were given to other MPs.

Club chairmen

The office of club chairman in the SPÖ took over Josef Cap , who had previously held the office. In the ÖVP, Josef Pröll was initially the club chairman. After his renewed election to the federal government, Pröll was replaced by Karlheinz Kopf . Heinz-Christian Strache took over the function again in the FPÖ , while the BZÖ elected Josef Bucher as club chairman. Before that, Stefan Petzner had long been considered the favorite for the office of BZÖ club chairman. At the Greens, Eva Glawischnig-Piesczek replaced long-time club chairman Alexander Van der Bellen at the top of the club. The club chairman of Team Stronach , which was recognized as a club in November 2012, is Robert Lugar .
