Content and usage instructions

The New Pauly's list of abbreviations (DNP) has established itself as the standard for abbreviations for authors and works in German-speaking countries .

The index volume of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae , 2nd edition 1990, is authoritative with regard to the edition and the citation (section structure, etc.) .

If a work appears with an author without an abbreviation for the work, the work can only be cited with the indication of the author's abbreviation. These are authors whose only one work has survived, or whose meaning is largely based on the work in question. Anonymous works, compilations and general abbreviations are highlighted in old pink.

Variants of abbreviations and work titles are given in brackets, especially when there are competing abbreviations of a Greek and Latin work title.

It also contains the abbreviations of biblical books as they are laid down in the Loccumer guidelines . See the list of biblical books . In addition, abbreviations of apocryphal Christian writings and alternative abbreviations of biblical books (e.g. 1Reg = Regum liber prior = 1st Book of Kings ) according to the list of abbreviations in the Real Lexicon for Antiquity and Christianity . Biblical books and Christian scriptures are highlighted in gray. With these abbreviations, periods and spaces are usually omitted, ie instead of “Act. Barn. ”Is replaced with“ ActBarn ”and instead of“ 1. Kön. "Is abbreviated to" 1Kön ". These two forms should be considered equivalent and no distinction is made in sorting.

Abbreviations for authors and works from the Middle Ages and early modern times have also been included if they appear in the context of classical philology and are cited accordingly.

In addition, some abbreviations of individual compilations that are frequently used in relevant scientific texts, such as B. "FGrH" for " The Fragments of the Greek Historians " has been added.

Abbreviations for papyri are not included . These can be recognized by the fact that the abbreviation has the form “P. …" Has. Example: “P.NagHamm.” Stands for: “ Nag Hammadi Codices. Greek and Coptic Papyri from the Cartonnage of the Covers. ed. by JWB Barns, GM Browne and JC Shelton, Leiden 1981 ”. A list of these abbreviations can be found in:

John F. Oates et al: Checklist of editions of Greek, Latin, Demotic and Coptic papyri, ostraca and tablets. 5th edition. Bulletin of the American Society of Papyrologists , Supplement 9, 2001. A continuously updated online version can be found on the website Papyri.info.
