List of ancient historians at the Free University of Berlin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of ancient historians at the Free University of Berlin includes all university professors who have taught or are teaching at the Free University of Berlin (FU). This includes all regular university professors who were allowed to give lectures , i.e. full professorships , non- scheduled professors , junior professors , visiting professors , honorary professors , chair representatives and private lecturers . Old historians in the mid-level staff ( assistants and employees ) are only taken into account in justified exceptional cases.

When the FU was founded, a chair for ancient history was established, which has been occupied by Franz Altheim since 1950 . He came from the Humboldt University in Berlin , which is located in the eastern part of the city , where he had previously taught, and immediately brought with him the seminar library that had been stolen there. In 1974 a second chair for the history of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages was established, and in 1984 a third for ancient economic and social history. In 2009 a fourth chair for the historical geography of the ancient Mediterranean was established. The first chair now has a focus on Roman history. Ancient History is part of General History at the Free University of Berlin and thus belongs to the Friedrich Meinecke Institute . It is also part of the Old World Interdisciplinary Center of the Department of History and Cultural Studies at Freie Universität.

The first column shows the name of the person and their life data, the second column shows entry into the university, and the third column shows their departure. Column four names the highest position achieved at Freie Universität. At other universities, the corresponding lecturer may have made an even more extensive scientific career. The next column lists special features, the career path or other information relating to the university or institute. The last column shows pictures of the lecturers, which is currently difficult due to the image rights.
