Neunburg vorm Wald - old town

File number E-3-76-147-1

The ensemble includes the old town of Neunburg vorm Wald in the course of the high medieval town fortifications with parts of the former town moat and the flanking buildings at the western entrance to the old town.

Neunburg lies on a granite spur that stretches like a pointed triangle from east to west to the point where the Rötzerbach flows into the Schwarzach. The elevation of the terrain and the flanking of the aforementioned watercourses to the south and north resulted in an ideal fortification site. At the western tip, where the rock slope is steepest and reaches a height difference of about 20 meters, a castle was built and separated from the eastern foreland by a ditch.

In the 14th century it was necessary to expand the settlement east of this moat with a second, subsequent fortification: in the east, that is to say at the base of the triangle, a new large neck moat was dug and completed around 1420; Circular wall and towers with their own kennel, in front of them the water surface of the Upper Torweiher outside the Halsgraben and the Lower Torweiher on the Rötzerbach, as well as the possibility of flooding the trench with Schwarzach water through a lock device below the northeast tower, the so-called Schiltenhilm, which stands on oak pile grating, made Neunburg one A fortified city surrounded by water, on whose fortifications the Hussite invasion of 1418 is said to have failed. In addition to the two main gates, the Upper Gate and the Lower Gate, there was a small gate in the north for fetching water in the Schwarzach, the "water gate" protected by a bulwark, and in the south a door for the cloth makers, which made them into the "cream ”At the Lower Torweiher, where the“ frames ”for drying the towels were.

In 1323 Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian granted the citizens of Neunburg full tax exemption for eight years so that they could build their fortifications and repair the city better. At the beginning of the 17th century the fortification was neglected, so that in 1634 the Swedes could take the city; under the compulsion of the occupiers, the wall was repaired and the upper gate was renewed in 1636, before the city occupied by the Swedes was taken by the imperial in 1641.

Despite the removal of the two gates and a large part of the fortress as well as detailed changes in the old town area, the medieval layout of the city can still be seen today. The main road axis rises from the Lower Gate on the north flank of the castle wall, which it reached at the moat, which is now overbuilt by the late Gothic town hall, and leads from there straight to the former Upper Gate. From the Bergstrasse a junction leads through the castle gate into the castle and church area, the highest point of the elevation. To the north bar of the castle, the Dürnitz-Stock or the so-called Old Castle, one from the 14th / 15th. The long wing, which dates back to the 19th century and was rebuilt for a district court in the 19th century, with a west-facing watchtower, is joined at an acute angle in a southeastern direction by the long bar of the so-called New Castle, a stately residential building of the ducal adjoining residence from the first half of the 16th century. The late Gothic town hall marks the interface between the manorial castle area and the bourgeois settlement area along the upper main street, where in the 17th-19th centuries. The two small squares of Hahnenplatz and Schrannenplatz are left out. The main street, which is widened here and lined with houses with gable and eaves, narrows again at the site of the former Upper Gate. In addition to the manorial development in the west and the partly artisanal, partly bourgeois development in the east, the social structure in one to two-storey small houses from the 17th to 19th centuries can be seen in the south-east and north-east corners, Am Bügerl and Im Bleihof. Century. The dominant buildings of the castle and the nave of the parish church with their domed tower dominate the landscape from a distance.

The ensemble experienced the most sensitive disruption in the area south of the parish church due to the erection of immeasurable new buildings. In addition, the structural substance of the old town was partially changed and reduced in the second half of the 20th century through redesigns and new buildings that were adapted in terms of cubature.

Seebarn

Seebarn 22 08 2013 02.jpg

File number E-3-76-147-3

The ensemble includes the village center of the place with the church district, the school and the inn.

On the thoroughfare, from the inn on the eaves side, a rising village square opens up with property flanking to the side, the staggering of which is funnel-shaped towards the architectural highlight with the church, rectory, schoolhouse and churchyard defense tower. It is precisely the correspondence between this smaller so-called school tower and the larger church tower that creates a picturesque picture and shows, as seldom elsewhere, the character of a rural center in the late medieval period.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The monument property - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the monument atlas or the entry in the Bavarian monument list. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
