Ensemble Altstadt Neustadt an der Donau

File number: E-2-73-152-1

Old town

The ensemble includes the town of Neustadt, founded by Duke Ludwig II of Bavaria on the right bank of the Danube between Ingolstadt and Kelheim at the latest in 1273 to secure traffic on the river and the Danube Valley Road. The name of the new settlement, called Nova Civitas in the sources, presupposes an old settlement and the relocation of certain functions of such a settlement, according to all that is known about the Wittelsbach urban policy of that time. Research has linked the second name of Neustadt, Seligenstadt, which has come down to us in the early sources of the town's history, with the church town of Heiligenstadt to the east of Abensberg. A third earlier name with the same meaning as Neustadt, Trephenau, belongs to an older aristocratic seat, which is still vaguely recognizable in a castle stables immediately east of the city. A village settlement that might have been part of it could have merged into the new settlement.

The city plan has a square shape, the side lengths are each 300 meters. According to the slightly larger Kelheim model, the complex is divided into two almost equal halves by the north-south running, street-market-like, expanded thoroughfare that was formerly sealed off by the Danube and Ingolstädter Tor; the center of the axis is perpendicular by a wider, plaza-like Crossed street, the location of the church and town hall, which approach the intersection from the west and east and form an absolute dominant feature of urban development at this point. The church tower, an east tower, also takes on the function of a city tower in the alignment of the main axes. The eastern part of the transverse axis, bounded by the late Gothic town hall of the 15th century with the associated Anna chapel and up to the 19th century by the Abensberger Tor, is the actual market square (town square), the western part, more of a church square, is dominated by St. Lorenz, one of them late Gothic hall, which was preceded by a building in the 13th century. Michaelskapelle, cemetery and rectory reinforce the character of this area.

town hall

By 1363 at the latest, the city was fortified with walls, towers and the three gates. The west side, in front of which only floodplains stretched, remained without a gate, and the church facilities were therefore also concentrated in the western part of the axis cross, which is little touched by traffic. The two main street axes are predominantly built on by two-storey gabled houses. It is almost exclusively about plastered buildings, built as craftsmen and arable houses in the 17th and 18th centuries. Century, often expanded in the 19th century. The reconstruction after the destruction in 1945 largely corresponds to the historical appearance of the previous buildings. The preserved stair and tail gables, which Neustadt was rich in until 1945, are of particular importance for the streets and squares.

In the side streets, which usually open up the four districts in rib form, the height and density of the buildings are downgraded; Ground-floor saddle roof buildings, surrounded by small house gardens, predominate. In the lions' den, the irregular ground plan of this area probably documents an old settlement core from the time before the city was founded. In the alleys Am Rundturm, Im Krähwinkel, Krebsturmgasse and Lugausgasse, historical small houses have been preserved in connection with parts of the former city fortifications, which were completed at the end of the 14th century, some of which have a picturesque character. The moats and ramparts and the preserved towers and walls of the former city fortifications clearly demarcate the historical urban space and set it apart from its rural or suburban surroundings. Most of the ramparts were planted with avenues around 1895.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
