The following 12 films, all from different countries, were nominations in the Best Foreign Language Film category for the 1961 Academy Awards . The highlighted titles were the five ultimately nominated films, which come from France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Mexico and Sweden. The Oscar finally went to the Swedish revenge drama The Virgin Spring by Ingmar Bergman .

For the first time, Brazil took part in the competition.
