This list includes the ambassadors of the United States of America in the Republic of Austria and before that in the Austro-Hungarian Empire . The United States Embassy in Vienna has been located in the Alsergrund district at Boltzmanngasse  16 since 1947 .

Ambassador to Austria-Hungary

The Kingdom of Hungary received extensive autonomy in the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1866 , but foreign policy continues to be controlled centrally from Vienna . Hungary did not have its own US embassy.

In 1902 the US Legation was elevated to embassy status.

On April 6, 1917, the USA declared war on the German Empire and withdrew Ambassador Penfield from Vienna the following day, the embassy was closed. Austria-Hungary broke off diplomatic relations on April 9, 1917. Until then, Joseph Grew acted as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim . Consular duties in Austria were then taken over by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain for the United States , until the United States finally declared war on Austria-Hungary on December 7, 1917.

Ambassador to the First Republic

In 1921 the USA reestablished full diplomatic relations with the new Republic of Austria.

After the annexation of Austria in March 1938, the First Republic ceased to exist and Austria became part of the German Reich . John Cooper Wiley served from March 13, 1938 to April 30, as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim in the USA.

In 1951, the American legation in occupied post-war Austria was upgraded to a regular embassy.
