List of states in the United States by life expectancy

The following list sorts the states of the United States according to their average life expectancy for the year 2009. During this time, the state of Hawaii had the highest life expectancy at 81.3 years while the state of Mississippi had the lowest life expectancy at around 75 years. Life expectancy in the state with the highest life expectancy was thus roughly on par with the Netherlands , while life expectancy in the state with the lowest life expectancy was roughly the same as in Malaysia . Overall life expectancy in the US was about 78.9 years, roughly the same as in Chile .

Ethnic groups by life expectancy

The five ethnic groups defined by the US Census Bureau : Asians (English. Asian Americans), Americans of Latin American descent (English. Hispanic or Latino Americans), White (English. White Americans), Native American or American Indian, and Black (African American or Black) based on average life expectancy in 2009. At 86.7 years, Asians had the highest life expectancy of all ethnic groups in the USA. Their life expectancy also exceeded measured life expectancy in every country around the world. Black Americans, on the other hand, had the lowest life expectancy. Their life expectancy of 74.6 years was roughly the same as in Jordan . It also shows in which state the ethnic group has the highest and in which it has the lowest life expectancy.
