List of castles, fortresses and palaces in Rhineland-Palatinate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of castles, fortresses and palaces in Rhineland-Palatinate names castles , fortresses and palaces in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is part of the list of castles and palaces in Germany . Ornamental and replicas that were never used as residential buildings or for defense are not listed .

Rhineland-Palatinate did not emerge until 1947 - after the Second World War  - as an artificial structure from that part of the former French occupation zone that was neither Saarland nor Baden-Württemberg . Before that, today's parts of the state had belonged to a multitude of secular and spiritual rulers for over a thousand years, e. For example, the influential electors of the Palatinate , Mainz , Cologne and Trier (the last three were also archbishops ) or knights who were less important and whose - initially not hereditary - status developed from the feudal system. Marriages and inheritance had contributed to ever more restructuring and fragmentation, so that a veritable patchwork of domains had emerged. The castles and fortresses of the historic Electoral Palatinate are now in five federal states and in Alsace .

The sovereigns were able to point out their importance with buildings such as castles , fortresses and palaces . Therefore, the edges of the low mountain ranges ( Eifel , Palatinate Forest ) and the river valleys ( Middle Rhine , Moselle ) are lined with castles or fortresses, the Donnersberg massif in the North Palatinate Uplands was even surrounded by five castles, and in the larger cities such as Mainz and Koblenz and Trier , the magnificent castles and palaces are particularly striking.

Although the great wars ( Peasants 'War , Thirty Years' War , Palatine War of Succession , Napoleonic Wars ) had repeatedly caused destruction, the ruins of razed castles or burned-down palaces were often the result of successor buildings, which even surpassed the former in splendor. And the damage caused - especially in cities - by the shelling and bombing of the two world wars of the 20th century has now largely been eliminated.

The list also includes ring ramparts that date back to the Celtic era, i.e. were created in the 1st millennium BC.

The list is sorted alphabetically:

  1. by districts or urban districts
  2. by object name

Links to articles can be stored behind the objects that provide additional information.
