The game between SV Werder and Hamburger SV is the game that was played most often in the Bundesliga: Bremen had only missed a single season in the Bundesliga, HSV played uninterruptedly in the highest German from 1963 to 2018 Division. It also adds to the rivalry that both clubs are the leading clubs in their cities and that both Bremen and Hamburg are the largest Hanseatic cities as well as the largest northern German cities. The catchment areas of both clubs are adjacent and it is not uncommon for the two to overlap. The districts of Cuxhaven and Rotenburg (Wümme) in Lower Saxony are particularly affected by the overlap .
