List of members of the Hockey Hall of Fame
The Hockey Hall of Fame is a hall of fame for the most important personalities in ice hockey , which was founded in 1943. This list offers a complete overview of all persons recorded so far. The 18-member admission committee decides on admission .
The Hockey Hall of Fame is currently divided into three broad categories, which include players, officials and referees. Special features of each category are explained in the respective section.
As of the 2020 class, the Hockey Hall of Fame includes 289 players (8 women), 112 officials and 16 referees. Of the total of 417 personalities, 12 were accepted posthumously .
player
The player category has existed since the Hockey Hall of Fame was founded. The prerequisite for inclusion is that the player ended his career at least three years ago. However, this deadline was suspended for ten particularly outstanding personalities: Dit Clapper (1947), Maurice Richard (1961), Ted Lindsay (1966), Red Kelly (1969), Terry Sawchuk (1971), Jean Béliveau (1972), Gordie Howe (1972), Bobby Orr (1979), Mario Lemieux (1997) and Wayne Gretzky (1999). After Gretzky's admission, however, it was decided that the deadline should henceforth be met, unless there are “certain humanitarian circumstances”.
In 1988 a special category for "veterans" was created in order to honor players who, in direct comparison to players of their time, had no chance of being accepted or were simply "overlooked". In the course of time, 11 players were included in this category before the committee decided in March 2000 to dissolve this special category and to take over all previous members in the "normal" player category. Since 2012, a maximum of four players per year have been accepted.
Of the total of 289 players, a clear majority are Canadians; there are only 15 Americans and 24 Europeans. The Toronto Maple Leafs make the most of a team with 62 players, while the defenders are most represented by position with 88 members.

Functionaries
The category for officials (in English "builders" for "builders") has also existed since the Hockey Hall of Fame was founded. These "builders" are personalities who had a significant influence on the development and promotion of ice hockey. For a recording, it does not matter whether they are still active. A maximum of two people per year can be accepted, whereby these two places are shared with the referees, so that only two officials can be accepted if no referee is elected.

former members
Since all members are permanently admitted to the Hockey Hall of Fame, there is only one former member so far. Alan Eagleson , first executive director of the National Hockey League Players' Association , was accepted as an official in 1989 to honor his services to the rights of players in the National Hockey League . In the 1990s, however, he was sentenced to imprisonment for fraud and embezzlement, as a result of which several members of the Hockey Hall of Fame threatened to leave, should Eagleson remain a member. Eagleson then resigned voluntarily in April 1998, joining a committee that was supposed to vote on his expulsion a few days earlier.
