List of National Historic Landmarks in Alabama

This list of National Historic Landmarks in Alabama lists all objects and sites in the US state of Alabama that are classified as National Historic Landmarks (NHL) in that US state and are under the supervision of the National Park Service . These buildings, objects and other sites meet certain criteria with regard to their national importance. A site in Alabama was originally classified as an NHL, but later lost that designation.

Four National Historic Sites are administered by the National Park Service in Alabama . One of them, the Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site , is also designated a National Historic Landmark. The others are Horseshoe Bend National Military Park , Russell Cave National Monument, and Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site .

Baldwin An archaeological site of the Mississippi Indian culture (1250–1550). The eighteen grave mounds are located on Mound Iceland in the river delta of Mobile and Tensaw River . The site is believed to have served as a social, religious, and economic center on the central Gulf Coast of the United States.

Dallas This church was the starting point of the 1965 March from Selma to Montgomery and therefore played an important role in the bloody events that eventually led to the adoption of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in the United States Congress .

Barbour This is the house where Henry De Lamar Clayton, Jr. lived , the author of the Clayton Antitrust Act , which prohibited certain economic practices that were not fair to competition. Clayton was named district judge in 1914 and advocated reform of the judiciary.

Talladega Home of teacher Jabez Lamar Monroe Curry , who played a vital role in expanding and improving the public school system and teacher training in the southern states.

Montgomery Church of Martin Luther King , who was a pastor here from 1954 to 1960. The Montgomery Improvement Association , led by King, had its headquarters in the church and organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott from here in 1955 .

mobile Launched in 1941, the submarine was the first Gato-class submarine to be completed before the United States entered World War II and matched the standard of American submarines at the beginning of the war. USS Drum sank fifteen Japanese ships and was awarded twelve Battle Stars.

Madison This neo-Gothic church was built in 1859. It is named by the National Park Service as one of the pristine examples of Gothic sacred architecture in the southern United States. The structure is one of the least modified works by Frank Wills .

The delegates from six breakaway states met in this building on February 4, 1861 , to discuss the Constitution of the Confederate States of America . This was adopted on February 8, 1861. Jefferson Davis was inducted into office on the west side of the structure on February 18 as President. The Congress of the Confederate States of America met here until May 22, 1861. Then the capital was moved to Richmond , Virginia .

Russell Fort Mitchell was built in the 19th century. Fort Mitchell represents three phases of encounter with the Indians of North America . In the first phase, due to the warlike aspects of the Manifest Destiny in the Creek War, the Muskogee were defeated and forced to assign land; in the second phase there was trade with the Indians under the supervision of the Bureau of Indian Affairs ; the third phase concerns government attempts to meet contractual obligations.

Baldwin Fort Morgan was built on the Gulf of Mexico in 1834 and was used by the Confederate Army during the Battle of Mobile Bay . As a result of the battle, the units of Union Navy Admiral occupied David Farragut , the Mobile Bay , blocking access to the port of Mobile for ships Confederate.

Elmore Fort Toulouse was built in 1717 at the confluence of the Coosa and Tallapoosa rivers and abandoned in 1763 after the Peace of Paris was signed . Fort Toulouse was the easternmost outpost of colonial Louisiana . Andrew Jackson established a new fort here after defeating the Muskogee in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in 1814 .

Tuscaloosa Soldiers from the Alabama National Guarde , US Marshals and US Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach escorted Vivian Malone past Governor George Wallace to the university when he tried to prevent Malone from visiting the university at the “ Stand in the Schoolhouse Door ”. This event is considered the first step towards desegregation at the University of Alabama and an important event in the history of the civil rights movement .

Marengo This neoclassical villa was built in the 19th century and has been designated a National Historic Landmark because of its unusual construction. The mansion was built over the course of eighteen years and designed by planter and amateur architect Nathan Bryan Whitfield. It is one of the few structures of this style in the United States that combines Doric , Ionic, and Corinthian column elements.

mobile This church was built in 1836 and is one of the oldest and least altered neoclassical style church buildings in the United States. It was designed by James Gallier , James Dakin and Charles Dakin.

Perry This mansion was built in 1860 and is one of the best preserved examples of asymmetrical, Italian-style architecture by Richard Upjohn . It is the only remaining villa of this style, specially designed for the southern climate and the plantation lifestyle .

Pickens The paddle wheel steamer, built in 1925, is one of the last stern wheel steamer in the United States and only one of two such ships of the United States Army Corps of Engineers . The ship played an important role in the construction of the Alabama - Tombigbee - Tennessee River Project.

Dallas County On March 7, 1965, civil rights activists were attacked by law enforcement officers as they were crossing the bridge. The action was called "Bloody Sunday" ( Bloody Sunday known) and leads to the introduction and adoption of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 , considered the most effective strengthening of civil rights that has ever adopted by the Congress of the United States.

This building was built in 1898. Example of late 19th century commercial architecture. The station served as a key point of traffic to Montgomery . The concourse is significant because it shows the adaptation of bridge building techniques to canopy structures, an important step in the history of engineering in the United States.

Hale Moundville was settled as early as the 10th century and represents an important period of Mississippi culture in the southern states . It played a role in the southward expansion of this culture towards the Gulf coast.

Madison The underwater system was built in 1955 to generate zero gravity (simulated weightlessness), in which engineers, developers and astronauts could gain initial experience of the difficulties that could arise when working in weightlessness in space. The facility thus contributed significantly to the space program of the United States, in particular to the Gemini project , the Apollo program , to Skylab and in the preparation of the flights with the space shuttle .

Hale This church was built in 1853. The small church, built in the Carpenter Gothic style , has wooden buttresses and shows the influence of the 19th century architect Richard Upjohn . She is considered an outstanding example in the southeastern United States of the Picturesque movement in American church building.

Jefferson This church was a meeting place for the civil rights movement , on which the Ku Klux Klan carried out a bomb attack on September 16, 1963 . Four girls were killed and twenty-two other people were injured.

Montgomery Law firm of William Lowndes Yancey . He practiced in this house from 1846 to 1863. Due to several renovations in the 1970s and 1980s, the building lost much of its historical integrity and was therefore removed from the list of National Historic Landmarks. However, it remained on the National Register of Historic Places.
