List of winners of the Ancient Olympic Games

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Antique list of Olympic champions of the 75th to 78th and 81st to 83rd Olympic Games (480–468 and 456–448 BC) in Papyrus Oxyrhynchus 222

The list of winners of the ancient Olympic Games lists the known winners of individual competitions, sorted by year, name and competition. The numbering of the Olympic Games can only be valid in hindsight, because from 776 BC. BC to 724 BC There was only one competition, so that one cannot talk about games , but only after the introduction of the double stadium run. In principle, games can only be used from 708 BC onwards. With the introduction of the Pentathlon. Since the year 776 has become established in history, the list counts from this date.

The number of victory refers to the composition of Luigi Moretti . A (?) Question mark in front of the winner's name means that the year of victory is not certain.

Further explanations of abbreviations can be found under the keyword explanations .

So far, this list is based on Moretti's monograph from 1957; the two supplements to it have not been evaluated, so it is not complete.

There is also an alphabetical list of Olympic champions.

1st - 100th Olympic Games (776-380 BC)

1st - 13th Olympic Games (776–728 BC)

Up until the 13th Olympic Games, the stadium run was the only discipline. The race distance was about 192 meters, but varied greatly.

The runners appeared naked for the first time at these games. In 708 wrestling and pentathlon competitions were added. In 688 fistfighting was introduced as a new competition . A chariot race with four horses was introduced as a new competition at the 25th Olympic Games .

211-220. Olympic Games (AD 65-101)

The 211th Olympic Games in 65 AD were postponed by two years on the orders of Nero , who absolutely wanted to participate in them, so they took place in 67 AD. Nero was awarded the victories for various competitions as well as the victory in the chariot race for horses, even though he had fallen. The lyrical and tragedy poetry competitions were set up at Nero's request - and then only at these games.
