List of stumbling blocks in the Marche
The list of stumbling blocks in the Marche contains the stumbling blocks that were laid by the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig in the Italian region of Marken . Stumbling blocks remind of the fate of the people who were murdered, deported, expelled or driven to suicide by the National Socialists .
Stumbling blocks are usually from the last self-chosen place of residence of the victim. The first installations in this region took place on January 12, 2017 in Ancona and Ostra Vetere . The Italian translation of the term stumbling blocks is: pietre d'inciampo .

Giulio Ottolenghi was born in Jesi on July 23, 1893. His parents were Salvatore Ottolenghi and Terzina Lattes. In the First World War he fought as a soldier. After that he lived in Milan and worked as an employee. Ottolenghi was married to Ermenegilda Vallan. In December 1943, he was arrested for his racial origin and first imprisoned in San Vittore prison in Milan. He was transferred to the Fossoli transit camp and from there on August 2, 1944 with Transport No. 14 deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp . Giulio Ottolenghi arrived in Auschwitz four days later and was murdered there on December 23, 1944 by the Nazi regime.
The stumbling block was placed in front of that defunct house in Jesi where he spent his childhood and youth. |

Gaddo Morpurgo was born in Gorizia on March 31, 1920 . His parents were Donato Moisè Morpurgo (1878-1965) and Maria Treves (1881-1961). He had an older brother, Giulio (1913-1981). On December 7, 1943, Gaddo Morpurgo was arrested in Ostra Vetere. He was imprisoned in Pesaro and murdered in Forlì on September 5, 1944 . On that day, the SS brought ten men and seven women of Jewish origin to an airfield that was guarded by the Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana . The men were shot on the spot, the women twelve days later.
His brother named his first son, born in 1947, Gaddo . He became an architect. |
