List of signatories to the United States Constitution
The list of signatories to the United States Constitution includes the names of the signatories, both in the order in which they appear on the signature page and sorted by name. Under the leadership of George Washington , the United States Constitution was signed by these 39 delegates to the Philadelphia Convention on September 17, 1787 in Philadelphia . The constitution was not signed by any delegate from Rhode Island because that state did not send representatives. In addition, some famous historical figures of the time did not attend the meeting; including in particular Thomas Jefferson and John Adams , both of whom were on diplomatic missions abroad, as well as Samuel Adams , Thomas Paine and Patrick Henry , who found the existing system of government sufficient. In addition to the official signers, a William Jackson also signed the document, not as a delegate, but to certify the signature.
