List of banned National Hockey League jersey numbers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wayne Gretzky , whose number 99 was banned throughout the league.

This is a list of the National Hockey League's banned jersey numbers . Blocked jersey numbers ("retired numbers") are usually no longer assigned by a team in order to honor an outstanding player who wore this number.

166 jersey numbers are currently blocked in the National Hockey League. In addition, there are nine numbers of the former teams, which are re-assigned by their successor teams (see formerly blocked numbers ). The Toronto Maple Leafs have the largest number of players at 19, honoring two players at the same time with five different digits. The same case occurred three times with the Canadiens de Montréal , twice with the New York Rangers and once with the Chicago Blackhawks . The Calgary Flames and St. Louis Blues deviate from the practice of blocked numbers by accepting outstanding players in a kind of hall of fame ("honored numbers"), but the numbers continue to be assigned and only in exceptional cases (mostly prematurely due to illness / Injuries to Ended Careers). The Toronto Maple Leafs did the same for a long time, but blocked eleven jersey numbers to mark their centenary in October 2016.

Wayne Gretzky's jersey number "99" is the only number so far that was banned from across the league on February 6, 2000, with the Los Angeles Kings and Edmonton Oilers also honoring him separately. There are also eight other players whose numbers have been banned by two teams - Bobby Hull , Gordie Howe , Ray Bourque , Mark Messier , Patrick Roy , Tim Horton , Red Kelly and Scott Niedermayer .

The table is sorted chronologically according to the blocking date, but can be sorted according to all columns. Furthermore, the names of the teams that were current at the time of the award are given.

    Remarks
Note 1Finnigan was not a player from the current Senators, but from 1893 to 1934 . Due to his sporting success there and his efforts to bring a franchise back to Ottawa, he was posthumously honored on the first day of the new Senators.
Note 2 The Minnesota Wild dedicated the number 1 to their fans right at the start of the first season of 2000/01.
Note 3 The Florida Panthers honored Torrey, longtime general manager and president of the franchise, with the number of the year in which the Panthers were founded (1993).
Note 4 The Florida Panthers honored Huizenga, the first owner of the franchise, with the number of his birth year (1937).
Note 5The Vegas Golden Knights paid tribute to the 58 deaths in the Las Vegas mass murder that occurred just before the team's first season began.
Note 6In consultation with Tonelli, Anders Lee , team captain of the Islanders at the time of the suspension, was allowed to wear the number 27 on his back.

    Formerly blocked numbers

If a franchise is renamed or relocated, the previously blocked numbers are not treated uniformly. While some franchises do not assign the numbers under a new name, the Colorado Avalanche and the Carolina Hurricanes decided to put the numbers back into circulation after relocation. This affects players from the Nordiques de Québec and the Hartford Whalers . With the sale of the Phoenix Coyotes and their renaming to Arizona Coyotes in 2014, the earlier numbers of the Winnipeg Jets will also be reassigned. The nine numbers are listed below.

There can also be other reasons why a blocked number is worn again: Bobby Hull, for example, got his son Brett to wear his blocked “9” with the Phoenix Coyotes . In addition, Mario Lemieux made his comeback after his "66" was banned from the Pittsburgh Penguins , and ran back on with her as a result.
