This list of Indian states by the Human Development Index ranked the 29 states and 7 union territories of India after its Human Development Index (HDI: Human Development Index ). The HDI has been calculated as a prosperity indicator for all countries in the world since 1990 by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), taking into account life expectancy , the duration of training (number of school years that a 25-year-old has completed) and the expected duration of training Child of school age as well as the gross national income per capita (see below for the calculation method ; compare also the IHDI: Inequality- adjusted index of human development ; for the breakdown of the HDI by women and men see the GDI: index of gender-specific development ).

In 2017, the HDI of India was 0.639 (HDI women 0.575 to 0.683 men) in 130th place worldwide (2016: 129) , comparable to Namibia or Tajikistan , and thus belonged to the countries with " medium human development". The HDI of the 705  Scheduled Tribes was only 0.27 across India (unchanged since 2000). In terms of gender, India had low scores, mainly because of the low level of employment and political participation of women: GDI 0.841 (no rank) and GII 0.524 (rank 127) ; GDI and GII are not known for the states.
