List of artists with the highest number of BVMI certified recordings sales

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of performers with the highest number of BVMI-certified sound carrier sales is an overview of all artists who have received gold and platinum awards from the Bundesverband der Musikindustrie (BVMI) for at least five million records sold in Germany .

Notes on interpreting the statistics listed

General information

This list shows musicians and groups who have received awards from the BVMI for at least five million records sold. The BVMI has officially awarded gold and platinum awards since January 1, 1975 for audio products and since 1991 for audio and video carriers. The record companies concerned must apply for the certifications; the awards are not automatically assigned. Already before 1975 record awards were made by the respective sound carrier manufacturer, but not according to standardized and officially tested criteria. According to a guideline dated January 1, 1976, the number of rated sales is determined according to the units sold to GEMA or another collecting society of the authors as domestic sales. The article also contains external sales figures - which were not stated through a BVMI award - if these can be proven to come from trustworthy sources.

The artists can be found in the following table in descending order according to their record sales. In addition, the table contains further information, such as the genre that the respective artist mainly serves, the BVMI certification period, the most successful publication and a fold-out list that sorts all records in descending order of sales and first publication. The information in the column number and list of phonogram sales is a minimum number of phonograms sold by the respective artist or band. Since there are fixed lending limits for the awards, the actual sales of the respective sound carriers can be somewhat higher - i.e. between the awarded and the next awarding limit.

In addition, music streaming is also included in the sales statistics for music albums and singles . However, only “premium streams” of the corresponding online music services with a certain “conversion factor” are included. In the case of singles, premium streams are taken into account regardless of the release date; in the case of music albums, these are only taken into account for sound carriers that were first released after January 1, 2016. The premium streams determined in this way - which are streamed for over 30 seconds - were taken into account with a factor of 100: 1 up to April 5, 2018, and with a factor of 200: 1 for singles since April 6, 2018. Only the twelve most played tracks on an album are counted for the calculation of the album equivalent . The two most played tracks are not taken into account with the actually achieved “streams”, but only with the average amount of the ten following tracks. The premium streams determined in this way - which are also streamed over 30 seconds - were taken into account for music albums up to April 5, 2018 with a factor of 1000: 1 and since April 6, 2018 with a factor of 2000: 1.

For a more detailed list of all awards see the main article “Awards for Music Sales” or the corresponding discography section for the respective artist.

Qualification and addition rules

All gold and platinum awards of the BVMI as well as externally documented sales information are included in the compilation. For music groups, only the sales of the band count. For solo artists, sales from authors' participation (music / text) and productions sung by other performers also count. Successes achieved as a band member are not counted towards the solo artists. Exception: A song or a single in which the respective artist was also involved as an author (music / text) or producer received a gold or platinum award.

Example: Die Söhne Mannheims single And when a song received a gold record in 2005. The interpretation of the song is only assigned to the Sons of Mannheim as a band and not to the individual band members such as Metaphysics , Xavier Naidoo or Tino Oac . Since a "band" as such cannot produce or write a song, the authors (composers / songwriters) and producers are also assigned this award, so that Naidoo, among other things, receives the gold award for And if a song . For example, Naidoo counts the single as an author's success and not an interpretation success.

Problem

Since the BVMI has only been awarding gold and platinum awards since January 1, 1975 and sales figures from the previous period are difficult to research, bands and artists whose "peak phase" was before 1975 do not appear on this list. The list does not include artists like Peter Alexander and Caterina Valente or bands like the Rolling Stones , who sold an estimated more than five million records in Germany in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

Furthermore, only video and audio carriers that have been registered and registered with the BVMI are awarded gold and platinum awards.

Limits to the award of phonograms

Since September 24, 1999, the award limits have been adjusted at irregular intervals. Between 1999 and 2002, due to the decreasing sales figures, the lending limits were gradually lowered. In the course of increasing single sales through downloads and the integration of premium music streaming, the lending limits were raised for the first time in 2014 (premium music streaming is streaming that is accessed for a fee). The awards are based on the respective release date of the sound carrier, not on the date of certification. For example, an album that was released in 1980 is now awarded a gold record for over 250,000 - according to the allocation rules for 1980 - and not for 100,000 units sold.

In Germany there is a special feature that gold records are awarded again between the platinum awards; only AMPROFON in Mexico also uses this award system. Usually, however, there are no further awards between the individual platinum records until a diamond record is awarded. In Germany these are awarded for albums and singles, all other sound carriers are not awarded diamond records in Germany. In countries such as Poland , the diamond record represents the highest award level. In Germany this is not the case. For example, if a music album receives a diamond award from the BVMI for 750,000 copies sold, but later reaches the eight hundred thousand mark, the diamond award is replaced by a four-fold platinum award as the highest award. There are genre-specific awards for comedy and jazz recordings, the award limits of which are identical to those of the video albums.
