The list of officers in the Great Northern War includes officers who led an association (military) in north-eastern Europe during the Great Northern War .
overview
In the early modern period around 1700, officers were the most respected class of the estates . Officers worked in almost all areas of society, also outside the army or the navy . In addition to their military powers, officers often had dual functions at government level, in the diplomatic service or as noble landowners. Around 1700 there are roughly equal bourgeois and noble officers. For the nobility , in the emerging absolutism, military service formed the replacement for the discontinued state functions that were increasingly taken over by bourgeois dignitaries in the newly founded authorities .
Citizens remained numerically well represented in the early modern army, but were disadvantaged in terms of promotions compared to noble officers and were less likely to rise to the highest military posts.
Another characteristic of the officer rank in the early modern armies was their ethnic heterogeneity. Almost all armies continued to consist of recruited troops to a certain extent , including officers from abroad. Nobles in particular entered into several employment relationships in foreign armies during their training years. The largest proportion of foreigners in the officer corps can be found in the Russian armed forces, which were modernized by Peter I based on the Western model and introduced a correspondingly large number of Western reformers into the army. Many of these foreigners rose to the highest positions and took on important management functions in the Russian state even after Peter's death.
