List of renaming of places in Lausitz 1936/37
This list contains places in Lusatia that were renamed as part of the National Socialist Germanization of Sorbian place names in 1936 and 1937. Most places got their original names back after World War II . Otherwise the corresponding new names are printed in bold.
Also in other areas in the east of the German Empire, B. in East Prussia , numerous place names that were obviously of non-German origin have been replaced by new names. These were mostly completely newly created names, sometimes also direct translations of the original name into German. In some cases only the ending "Germanized" or the spelling was changed slightly. This wave of renaming ended in Lusatia at the beginning of 1938 after the Reich Ministry of the Interior intervened for military reasons - not content-related. In addition to places, numerous field and waterway names were renamed. B. the Struga the German name "Wellenbach".
Most of these renaming took place in the Prussian part of Upper and Lower Lusatia, while fewer were renamed in Saxony. Most of the renamed Saxon places got their original names back between 1946 and 1949 by order of the state authorities, while renaming in Brandenburg was much rarer.
