Livestrong

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Livestrong Foundation (formerly the Lance Armstrong Foundation ) is a non-profit organization founded in 1997 and based in Austin, Texas. The aim is to support cancer patients by providing assistance, education and support for cancer research.

The organization was founded by professional cyclist Lance Armstrong , who was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer in September 1996 . At that time he was given little chance of survival.

The organization is likely to have gained the greatest popularity through the sale of the yellow “Livestrong bracelet” from 2004 onwards. It sparked a boom in such silicone bracelets with many other organizations and companies creating and distributing similar bracelets.

Livestrong's worldwide fight against cancer began in 1999 with the comeback of Lance Armstrong in professional cycling and the Global Cancer Campaign.
