Loadlin is a free operating system starter program ( boot loader ) which can be used to start a Linux kernel from Windows 9x or MS DOS systems .

Technical details

Loadlin can be used from a running MS-DOS or Windows 9x system to start Linux . This was especially necessary in the past because incompatibilities between hard disks and the BIOS of a system did not allow a boot loader to be written to or accessed in the start sector of a hard disk. Occasionally a DOS -based, additional application was required for certain sound cards in order to be able to use them at all.

Nowadays, this boot loader is less common because it requires a DOS-based system (like the Windows 9x line ).

Technically Loadlin is a DOS program that the kernel of Linux and a RAM disk can create. These must be available as an image file under DOS or Windows and are no longer required after the Linux system has started.

Loadlin is licensed as Free Software under the GNU General Public License (GPL, ≥2).
