Long reach Ethernet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Long Reach Ethernet ( LRE ) is a proprietary procedure from Cisco for expanding Ethernet technology . It enables an Ethernet connection according to IEEE Standard 802.3 to be made available via normal copper wire pairs (telephone connection cable ) with data rates between 15  Mbit / s at distances of approx. 1 km and 5 Mbit / s at approx. 1.5 km. It increases the range of traditional Ethernet (e.g. Category 5 cables) over copper cables from 100 meters to up to 1500 meters. Technically, Long Reach Ethernet is based on 10BaseS from Infineon and is therefore one of the DSL processes. Existing infrastructures for the telephone network can be used with LRE.
