research

Suchman describes in Plans and Situated Actions (1987) that people do not solve problems primarily through the execution of plans . Instead, plans are one of several resources that people use in their actions. The analyzes in Plans and Situated Actions are ethnomethodologically based. The work ensured in cognitive science that context was seen as an important factor in problem solving.

Suchman's research into working practice e.g. B. by air traffic controllers and office workers served as the basis for ethnographically informed design decisions for computer systems. Her current research deals with robotics and remote control in weapons technology.
