Mills on the Trattenbach

The mill ensemble on the Trattenbach in Maria Luggau in the municipality of Lesachtal was built in the 17th and 18th centuries . Century. In 1976 four mills were placed under monument protection, in 1968 the Richter-Freiberger mill, called the RF mill.

The following four mills from the 17th and 18th centuries have been preserved on the Trattenbach: the Hanseler mill, the Vorbeter mill, the Grossn mill and the Mattla mill. The Richter-Freiberger-Mühle was destroyed by a flood in 1966. In its place, the Tesn mill from Assing was moved here in 1997 and referred to as the RF mill.

In 1973, an association for the preservation of the old watermills was founded in Maria Luggau in order to revitalize the existing mills and a Brechel or bath room on the Trattenbach. They should be made accessible to the public through mill tours and foam grinding.

The five overshot wheel mills, lined up one behind the other, are small wooden block structures on a brick base storey with a saddle roof covered with spruce or larch boards. The grinders are made of wood and date from the 19th century. All mills are still operational.

The sixth of the listed mills is the Wachterbach double mill in the Rotte Tiefenbach. This wooden block building, built in 1750 with a sub-structure made of rubble masonry, still has a completely intact grinding tunnel.

In addition to grinding grain, water power in the Lesach Valley was also used to operate plows, elevators, threshing machines and sawmills.
