The Lukasbrücke (formerly: Lucasbrücke) in Datteln's southernmost district of Meckinghoven crosses the Dortmund-Ems Canal between the old and new Henrichenburg ship lift . It has two lanes and a sidewalk on both sides. It was named after the owner of the neighboring restaurant, Josef Lucas. Although it is a makeshift bridge , it is still in use today.
history
In 1899 the first bridge over the newly built Dortmund-Ems Canal was completed. The construct was made of iron with a wooden plank covering. This bridge was named after Josef Lucas, whose inn and sawmill were near the bridge. Due to the growing volume of traffic, a new bridge was built in 1933. This was wider, had abutments and had a concrete roadway. In 1945, towards the end of World War II , the bridge was blown up by the German Wehrmacht in order to make the advance more difficult for the advancing American troops. The fact that various bomb attacks damaged the canal so badly that it leaked to a depth of one meter made it possible for the residents to use a narrow wooden walkway as an emergency bridge. After the canal was put back into operation, a Bailey bridge was installed as a makeshift in 1946 . This was replaced by today's bridge in 1949.
This bridge was originally built for the Russian campaign to cross the Dniester , Dnepr or Volga . Since it was not used, it was stored on the premises of the Klöckner company at the end of the war . After removing a center piece to fit the width of the canal, it was opened to traffic on February 25, 1949.
The Lukasbrücke has been a listed building since March 2016.
In June 2016, the Waterways Construction Office in Datteln announced that it was planning to demolish the Lukas Bridge in 2022 as part of the expansion of the Rhine-Herne Canal.
