The Lutherhaus is a stately listed town house on the market in Neustadt an der Orla . It got its name because, according to legend , Martin Luther lived there several times during his stays in Neustadt.

history

According to structural findings, the core of the house dates from at least the 15th century, and has been expanded and rebuilt several times over the years. It got its present form through a renovation or an extension in the late 16th century. Structural features such as the courtyard passage as well as the large cellars and storerooms identify the building as a former trading house.

The building has been refurbished since the early 1990s, with the focus alternating between securing, renovation and conservation during the refurbishment. While the facade facing the market has been freshly prepared, the angled interior of the house shows the most varied structural conditions, which show differently preserved traces from all epochs of building use from the late Middle Ages to the recent past. In addition to the richly painted bay window inside, the column construction in the hall on the ground floor and the two historically paneled rooms are particularly noteworthy. One of the other rooms is occasionally referred to as the house chapel because of the wall drawings with biblical scenes found there .

There have been different usage plans for the house since the renovation began in the 1990s. Occasionally it has been used for exhibitions since then. Since the Reformation Day 2017, the Lutherhaus has been open to the public as a walk-in monument. The tourist information is located on the ground floor.

Inside, in addition to several plank rooms, there are also late medieval wall paintings and numerous art historical and architectural features. The structure, which was erected before 1450, experienced several construction phases and leads visitors on an exciting walk through its history. The exhibition itself focuses on the house as an exhibit. Another focus of the accessible monument is the history of the city and the Reformation.
