MIU Album is an album by the US band The Beach Boys . It was released on September 25, 1978 and was re-released in 2000 along with its successor LA (Light Album) .

The MIU album was produced by Alan Jardine and Ron Altbach, who was a touring and studio musician for the Beach Boys.

prehistory

The Beach Boys owed their record company Warner Bros. another album in 1977 in order to fulfill their recording contract. They wanted to do this with a Christmas album. Mike Love and Alan Jardine soon decided to offer this to Epic Records because they wanted to switch to this record company. Epic rejected this album as well as Warner from.

In 1977 the Beach Boys were embroiled in internal conflicts. On the one hand stood Mike Love and Alan Jardine, who kept referring to the successes of the last compilations and wanted to record songs that sounded like their old hits. On the flip side, Carl and Dennis Wilson , keen to push new material, preferred to be in the style of Smile . But at that time Love and Jardine had the upper hand, supported by Stephen Love, Mike's brother and then manager of the band. Dennis was busy recording his solo album in 1977, Carl was working on the singing career of Dean Martin's son Ricci and had to contend with personal problems.

Emergence

Much of the album was recorded at Maharishi International University (MIU - today: Maharishi University of Management ) in Fairfield , Iowa , which is also where the album was named. The rest of the recordings took place in the Beach Boys' own Brother Studios in Santa Monica , California . All of the original pieces on the album were written by Brian Wilson , Mike Love and Alan Jardine. Carl and Dennis Wilson only had guest appearances on the album.

The album reached number 151 on the US Billboard charts and disappeared from the charts after four weeks. It is the worst placement of a Beach Boys album. The single Peggy Sue made it to number 59 on the Billboard charts.

Song info

Hey Little Tomboy comes from the work on the album Adult Child from 1976. This was first announced as a solo album by Brian Wilson and later as the album of the Beach Boys, but was never released.

My Diane is an outtake of 15 big ones and ended up on MIU album . It was sung by Dennis in 1976. By "Diane" is meant the sister of Brian's wife Marilyn, Diane Rovell. Brian had a year-long love affair with her during his marriage. Diane lived with Brian and Marilyn Wilson from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s.

Peggy Sue is a cover version of the original by Buddy Holly . It has already been recorded for 15 big ones but didn't make it on the album. On the Christmas album it had new text and was called Christmas Time is here again .

The classic doo-wop song Come Go with Me is another foreign composition by the Del Vikings . The song was released as a single three years later and reached number 18 on the US charts.

Kona Coast , Bells of Paris and Peggy Sue had already been recorded for the Christmas album, but with Christmas lyrics.

Winds of Change is a composition by Ron Altbach and Ed Tuleja. Both played in the band King Harvest .

MIU and the consequences

After the MIU "fiasco" it became clear that Al Jardine and Mike Love could not lead the band to "fame and fortune" as they often claimed. Together with manager Steve Love, you made a lot of wrong decisions that cost the band a lot of money. The record deal with Reprise had expired and Epic Records, for which Love and Jardine had tried, no longer wanted to conclude with the Beach Boys. One way out was the James William Guercio record label , Caribou Records. In 1974 Guercio had worked several times with the Beach Boys, was their manager for a short time and was friends with Carl and Dennis Wilson. Dennis was already under contract as a soloist with Caribou. All these circumstances strengthened Carl Wilson and helped him to regain the upper hand in the band.
