A machine gun nest , or MG nest for short , describes a position in military colloquial language in which a machine gun is set up and operated by an operating team. In order to protect the soldiers from enemy fire and reconnaissance , such posts are protected by sandbags, camouflage nets, small earth walls, tree trunks or the like.

Massive use of machine-gun nests became important in World War I and World War II to protect the trenches , trenches or the fortified positions against advancing infantry , cavalry or air attacks.
