MPEG-1 audio layer 2

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2 (MP2) is also known as MUSICAM and standardized by the Moving Picture Experts Group for reducing audio data from digital audio data. The abbreviation is also used as a file extension for files that contain audio of this type.

While it has essentially been replaced by MP3 in the PC and Internet sectors , it remains the dominant standard for digital broadcasting as part of the DAB and DVB standards. It is also used occasionally on DVD .

The free Musepack, popular in the audiophile sector, emerged from MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2 .

How coding works with MP2

An uncompressed audio signal, sampled at f s = 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz, is present at the input . This is then divided into 32 sub-bands that are sub-sampled by a factor of 32 and have a bandwidth f s / 64. A scale factor is determined for each sub-band, which represents the highest value in this sub-band (i.e. the loudest tone) as well as the accuracy with which the samples are quantized in this sub-band.
