A major command ( German  Hauptkommando , MAJCOM or MACOM for short ) is a higher command authority of a branch of the armed forces of the United States , which is directly subordinate to the respective commander of the branch for the fulfillment of his tasks. A distinction must be made between functional and regional commands. Associated major commands of the individual armed forces can be grouped under a Unified Combatant Command under the direction of a Combatant Commander (CCDR) with special powers.
