Makatel (abbreviation for: magnetic card phone ) describes a method for cashless payment by credit card . This procedure is obsolete today and is no longer offered for new installations. It is only partially and reluctantly supported by network operators. The term Makatel is used both for the required device and for the data transfer protocol used.

equipment

It is a combination of a telephone , card reader and modem . After swiping the card and initiating the payment, a data connection to the network operator is established and the payment is authorized or rejected.

In the event of dial-up errors, card reading errors or other reasons, the dealer can try to call the network operator and give the card details verbally. He will then receive an authorization code by telephone with which he can post the payment as authorized.

protocol

The data transmission protocol used is based on data transmission via modem. Other transmission paths (e.g. TCP / IP , ISDN ) are not provided. There are different types of business transactions (payment, cancellation, credit) which are defined in the Makatel standard.

Importance in 2005

Makatel no longer plays a role today (with the exception of any old installations). It has been replaced by more modern processes such as POZ , ec-cash or GICC .
