Maksutov Newton Telescope

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Maksutov-Newton telescope combines the optical systems of the Newton and Maksutov telescopes .

General

A Maksutov-Newton telescope belongs to the catadioptric systems . This means that it does not have a pure lens or mirror optics , but rather contains a combination of both systems.

functionality

There is a Maksutov corrective lens at the beam entrance of the telescope . The basic shape is, however, the design of the Newton reflector . The overall length corresponds approximately to the focal length. The design is also related to the Maksutov-Cassegrain and Schmidt-Newton types .

advantages

In contrast to the classical Newtonian reflector a Maksutov-Newton telescope still has one at the beam input meniscus lens by Maksutov . This leads to a significantly better imaging performance compared to the classic Newton and a closed system that is less susceptible to unsteady air. Likewise, a Maksutov-Newton telescope does not need a coma corrector like a classic Newton, since a Maksutov-Newton telescope does not need any struts for the secondary mirror due to the meniscus lens . That is why Maksutov-Newtonian telescopes are often recommended and used for astrophotography .

disadvantage

Because a Maksutov-Newton telescope is a closed system, it takes significantly longer to adapt to the outside temperature. This is necessary because otherwise the image quality of a reflector will be severely impaired. A Maksutov-Newtonian telescope is also significantly heavier than a classic Newtonian due to the meniscus lens at the beam entrance . Another not unimportant disadvantage of the Maksutov Newtonian telescope is the significantly higher price compared to classic Newtonian reflectors.
