Makyo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Makyo ( Japanese : "Devil's World " ) describes a hallucination or illusion in the Japanese tradition of Zen Buddhism , which usually occurs during meditation . These can be pictorial or include other sensory impressions, such as a changed body feeling.

Makyos can significantly disrupt meditation and represent a hindrance on the path to enlightenment or spiritual practice. In Zen it is recommended to simply leave this hallucination unrated and continue with the practice. The master's task is also to distinguish Makyos from "real" mystical experiences such as Kenshō or Satori .
