Malcolm C. Bert

Malcolm C. Bert (born December 4, 1902 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , † March 18, 1973 in Westlake Village , California ) was an American production designer and art director .

Life

Bert began his career on the film staff in 1952 on a series of short film comedies from the One Reeler comedy series So You Want ... with George O'Hanlon . His first major Hollywood production was George Cukor's film musical A New Star in the Sky . In 1955 he was nominated for the Oscar in the category Best Production Design for the first time . However, together with Gene Allen , Irene Sharaff and George James Hopkins, he lost to the science fiction film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea .

He subsequently worked on the 1955 James Dean films, among other things ... because they don't know what they're doing and Beyond Eden . His second Oscar nomination came in 1959 for the comedy The Great Aunt , this time with George James Hopkins. That year, the film musical Gigi won .

From 1960, his focus of work shifted to television, where he worked until his death in 1973. His work as an art director has mainly included television series, including Smoking Colts , Gilligan's Island , In Love with a Witch, and The Charming Jeannie .
