Mannix files

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mannix File ( Mannix Ledger ) is a collection of the costs and income of most films produced by MGM between 1924 and 1962 . It is based on the notes of the American MGM manager Eddie Mannix . The costs incurred, the revenues in the American and Canadian markets, and the revenues in the non-American markets are listed for these films. The income primarily includes that of the respective first publication. Income from republication at later dates is considered separately.

The best known and most cited evaluation of the Mannix files was carried out by H. Mark Glancy. However, this analysis only covers the first 25 years of the Mannix Files (1924-1948). There are no other more comprehensive evaluations, although the data in the Mannix files are the basis for many more specific analyzes.

The reason why the Mannix file was created is unknown, as is its use and details of the calculation bases with which the figures were created. The document was found in the filing of Howard Strickling , long-time director of MGM publicity, and was named Mannix. Mannix and Strickling were considered fixers at MGM who worked closely together to solve many of the problems caused by MGM stars. The only thing that is certain is that Mannix, who was responsible for the financial affairs of the studio, among other things, had occasion and opportunity to work out the figures.

The original document from the Mannix file is currently held in the Howard Strickling Collection of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
