The Marijuana Party ( English Marijuana Party , French Parti Marijuanae ) is a political party in Canada , working for the legalization of cannabis products are used.
Aside from this one issue, the party has no other official political objectives, which means that party candidates are able to freely express their personal views on any other political issue.
The party's candidates are listed as Radical Marijuana on ballot papers and their status is comparable to that of independent candidates. The Marihuana Party sees itself as a "decentralized" party, with no statutes or constitution.
history
The party was founded by Marc-Boris St-Maurice in February 2000 and won 66,419 votes (0.52% of the vote) in the November 2000 election.
January and May 2004 saw changes to Canada's electoral law that significantly reduced the marijuana party's fundraising ability: the result of these changes was a very marked, 95% decrease in party's funding. As of 2004, those involved with more than two percent of the national vote were eligible to receive reimbursement of $ 2 per year and per individual vote as well as the majority of their campaign expenses.
In the June 2004 election, the party nominated 71 candidates but won only 33,590 votes (0.25% of the vote).
On February 28, 2005, founder St-Maurice announced his intention to join the Liberal Party of Canada in order to fight for the liberalization of marijuana laws within the ruling party .
In 2005, Blair T. Longley was elected as the new party leader.
