Martha M. Place

Martha M. Place (born September 18, 1849 in Readington Township as Martha M. Garretson, † March 20, 1899 in Ossining ) was an American murderer. Place was the first woman to die in the electric chair .

Offense

Martha Place was accused of murdering her stepdaughter Ida on February 7, 1898 out of jealousy. Her husband William Place testified that his wife Martha Place attacked him with an ax. He managed to escape and called the police. When the police officers arrived, Martha Place was found lying on the floor. She had attempted suicide with a gas leak. Her stepdaughter Ida was found murdered on the bed. Place was admitted to the hospital and later arrested and charged.

Martha Place's brother testified that his sister had been mentally retarded after a sled accident. Still, Place was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death . The death sentence was carried out on March 20, 1899 in Sing Sing Prison, Ossining , after the then Governor of New York State Theodore Roosevelt had rejected a petition for clemency. Her last words before the execution were:

"God save me."
"God save me."
