Marx Schwab (born before 1550; died after 1550) was a German silversmith .

Life

Around 1550 Schwab invented the first coin press with a screw press. Compared to previous coin presses, two heavy iron screws were used to reduce the thickness of the coins. Previously, a hammer and hand stamp were used for this. These new coin presses became popular in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was not until 1830 that the German inventor Diedrich Uhlhorn improved the minting of coins with the toggle press .
