Mason S. Stone

Mason S. Stone (born December 14, 1859 in Waterbury , Vermont , † July 13, 1940 in Montpelier , Vermont) was an American educator who worked as a state superintendent for education and was vice governor of Vermont from 1919 to 1921 .

Life

Mason Sereno Stone was born in Waterbury, Vermont. He worked as a teacher , principal and superintendent of a school. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1883 and his master's in 1909, both from the University of Vermont .

As Vermonter Superintendent for Education he worked from 1892 to 1900. He was also a member of the board of directors of Norwich University , which awarded him an honorary doctorate in law in 1909 .

Stone was Superintendent of Education in Manila , Philippines from 1900 to 1905 .

In 1905 he returned to the Vermont Superintendent's Office for Education and worked there until 1916.

Stone won the election of Lieutenant Governor of Vermont as a member of the Republican Party of Vermont in 1918 and his term lasted from 1919 to 1921.

In 1923 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the United States House of Representatives , losing the Republican preselection to Ernest W. Gibson , who moved into the House of Representatives.

Stone died in Montpelier, Vermont on July 13, 1940. His grave is in Montpelier's Green Mount Cemetery.
