Mathias Schmoeckel

Mathias Schmoeckel (* 1963 in Flensburg ) is a German lawyer and professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

Life

From 1983 Schmoeckel first studied art history at the University of Bonn , later he switched to law . He also spent a few semesters at the universities in Geneva and Munich. Schmoeckel completed his studies in 1989 with the first state examination in law, followed by his second state examination in 1993. In the same year he did his doctorate in Munich under Hermann Nehlsen with the thesis “The large space theory. A contribution to the history of international law in the Third Reich, especially during the war ” . From 1993 to 1999 he worked as a university assistant at the Institute for German and Bavarian Legal History at the University of Munich, followed in 1999 by his habilitation with the thesis “Humanity and State Reason. The Abolition of Torture in Europe and the Development of Common Criminal Procedure and Evidence Law since the High Middle Ages ” . On June 1, 1999, he was immediately appointed Professor of German and Rhenish Legal History at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität. From October 2003 to October 2004 he was Dean of the Faculty of Law and Political Science in Bonn. Since January 1st, 2006 Schmoeckel has been managing director of the Rhenish Institute for Notary Law. Schmoeckel is, among other things, a board member of the Rhenish Association for Legal History and a member of the board of trustees of the Dietrich-Bonhoeffer-Haus.
