Matilda (song)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Matilda (also Mathilda ) is a traditional calypso with a text by Norman Span , who was known under his pseudonym King Radio . The authorship is partially attributed to Harry Thomas , a pseudonym for Harry Belafonte and the guitarist Millard Thomas . The song was first recorded by Norman Span in 1938. In the 1953 version recorded by Harry Belafonte, the song became an international hit and one of the cornerstones of Belafonte's career.

Cover versions of the English version are by Jimmy Soul , Eddy Wally and Allan Sherman , each with slight changes to the text and title, partly as a parody. A successful version in Germany comes from Udo Jürgens .

The song is about Matilda stealing the money from her lover, which he hid under the pillow and with which he wanted to buy a house and land, and thus disappears to Venezuela.
