Matsumura Sōkon

Matsumura Sōkon ( Japanese 松 村 宗 棍 ) was one of the original karate masters of Okinawa . His exact year of birth and death is unclear; there are different sources for this: approx. 1809–1901, 1798–1890, 1809–1896 and 1800–1892.

biography

Matsumura Sōkon was born in Yamagawa, Shuri in the Kingdom of Ryūkyū (today: Yamagawa, Shuri , Naha , Okinawa Prefecture ). His first karate teacher was Sakukawa Kanga , who taught him for five years - until his death. Before Matsumura himself died in Shuri, he taught karateka, e.g. B. Ankō Asato , Ankō Itosu , Motobu Chōyū , Motobu Chōki , Kentsu Yabu , Nabe Matsumura , Chōtoku Kyan , Kiyuna Pechin , Ryosei Kuwae and Sakihara Pechin , who later became famous.

Matsumura Sōkon was considered the most prominent martial arts expert of his time in Okinawa, who is said to have great physical abilities. He is said to have developed the Kata Bassai Dai .
