The Mattelift

The Mattelift , also popularly known as the Senkeltram , is an electric passenger lift that connects the cathedral platform in Bern with Badgasse, 31.5 meters below, in the Matte district.

In 1894 an initiative committee was founded that encouraged the construction of the Mattelift. The electric passenger elevator Matte Platform AG , founded in 1896, commissioned the Berlin company Siemens & Halske with the execution. The lift went into operation on April 22nd, 1897. Originally, the system consisted of two cabins that were suspended in return. To reduce personnel costs, however, only one cabin was operated from 1910 and the second cabin was replaced by counterweights during a renovation in 1920. In 1952 the existing cabin was replaced by a new, spacious cabin made of metal, and in 1995 the steel structure was completely renovated for 170,000 francs.

In autumn 2008, the local company Emch Aufzüge AG replaced the existing steel cabin with a glazed cabin with floor heating. The drive motor, the electronic control and the steel cable were also replaced. The renewal cost 180,000 francs. 30,000 francs have to be spent on a timetable for the Bernmobil Line 30 to a 20-minute cycle.

Since the transport of passengers is not free of charge, the elevator is classified as a public means of transport within the meaning of the Federal Passenger Transport Act. This classification was confirmed by an order dated February 1, 2008 and the license was extended until the end of 2026. There is only one other elevator in Switzerland that operates with a federal license, namely the Hammetschwand elevator on the Bürgenstock. Today the Mattelift is integrated into the Libero tariff association . In addition, there is an independent house tariff, including a corresponding subscription.

It transports around 800 people a day, most of them from bottom to top. In 2007 the transport capacity was 316,500 people.

On foot you can reach the back of the Bern Cathedral of the mat made using the 183 wooden steps of from the 14th century, originating mat stairs that the mat lift is located right next to the valley station.
