Media (phonetics)

As mediae or hard mutes in the are Lautlehre the voiced plosives ( b , d , g ), respectively. The term comes from the Greek - Latin grammar tradition and is in contrast to those of the Tenuis and the Aspiratae in that the media stands between the two in relation to the strength of the exiting air flow. The corresponding breathy sounds bh , ie , ḍh , jh , gh , occurring in Sanskrit for example , which do not fit into this three-part system, are now called mediae aspiratae .
