Until May 20, 2016, Section 1 of the German Tobacco Ordinance limited smoking tobacco to a maximum of 5% humectant content of the total mass. For optimal smoke development, on the other hand, you need a significantly higher humectant content of 25 to 30%, as is common in the countries of origin of the water pipe culture ( Egypt , Jordan , Tunisia ). This restriction was lifted by the German Tobacco Products Act, thus trivializing the relevance of pure molasses.

When using molasses, the tobacco was simply sprinkled with molasses (approx. 10 ml to 50 g), which then had to be absorbed in a closed vessel for several hours. Subsequently, the appropriately moistened tobacco product could be consumed according to culture.

Components of molasses are molasses , glycerine , water and, if necessary, aromas, which influence the taste of the tobacco accordingly.

Distribution and sales

One of the best known producers of molasses is Bahrain . The usual amount is 100 ml regardless of the supplier. Since 10 ml was sufficient for the earlier standard pack of 50 g water pipe tobacco, one molasses bottle was sufficient for around 10 packs of tobacco. After the changes to the German tobacco regulations, only remnants can be found.
