Melville Castle

Melville Castle is a three story Gothic Revival mansion . It is located approximately 2 kilometers southwest of Dalkeith , Midlothian , Scotland , near the River North Esk .

An earlier residential tower in the same place was demolished to make way for the current building. Melville Castle was built between 1786 and 1791 by James Playfair for Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville .

The original tower block belonged to the Melville family before it was owned by Sir John Ross in the 14th century. The building and land later changed hands several times before being sold to David Rennie in 1705. Henry Dundas owned it through his daughter's marriage.

The building stood empty from the 1980s, but was later (again) restored as a hotel.
