Memphis in May

Memphis in May is a folk festival that has been held in Memphis , Tennessee for four weeks since 1976 . It consists of four independent parts.

It starts with the Beale Street Music Festival , at which well-known artists from the rock and pop area, but also blues and soul greats, contest a festival on Beale Street over a weekend . Up to 100,000 visitors come every day. In the International Week that follows , a different country is the focus every year and information is provided about it both in schools and at public events.

The nationally best known part of Memphis in May is The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest . More than 250 teams that have successfully passed various qualifying rounds are competing in the world's largest pork barbecue competition. Around 90,000 spectators watch the teams in the disciplines of pork ribs, pork shoulder and whole pork. In addition, there are special prices for the most original stand, the best side dish, etc.

The festival ends with the Sunset Symphony, with the Memphis Symphonic Orchestra performing on the banks of the Mississippi River for free or for a small fee with famous musicians from the city.
