Mendolito

Mendolito is the common name for a former Siculian town of unknown name that was in the Mendolito district of the city of Adrano . It is also called Simaethia in scientific literature . It is located a good 4 km as the crow flies northwest of Adrano on the left side of the Simeto in the metropolitan city of Catania in Sicily .

The city was surrounded by three walls. During excavations, the south gate, which had two towers, was found. The wall consisted of two parts. It was built from lava stones and filled with other stones in between.

The city was discovered in the 18th century by a Benedictine abbot. The excavations took place in the period from 1898 to 1910 and 1962/3. An inscription in Siculian was found on the south gate . Parts of the inscription are related to Italian languages ​​from other regions of Italy. Important bronze finds were also discovered. They are in the Archaeological Museum of Adrano.
