Menningarnótt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Menningarnótt [ ˈmɛnniŋg̥ar̥no͡ʊʰt ] ( Icelandic " Culture Night ") is an annual event in Reykjavík , the capital of Iceland . It usually takes place on the first Saturday after August 18th. It was launched in 1996 by Reykjavík City Council and has since grown into one of the largest events in Iceland - rivaling the Icelandic National Day on June 17th.

An estimated 100,000 people take part in the annual concerts and celebrations in central Reykjavík - a considerable part of the only 300,000 inhabitants in Iceland and around 118,000 inhabitants of the city.

The festival usually consists of a main stage in the city center and many small facilities in the center and outskirts of Reykjavík. The highlight of the event is often a concert on the main stage with some of Iceland's most popular bands, followed by a bigger fireworks display.
